Theseo Brings Up A Treble
Saturday, 4 September 2010: | | Theseo | The pair had previously combined with Kiss From A Rose and More Strawberries, however it was the win by Theseo that put the icing on the cake for the duo.
“What a champion, just an amazing horse,” said an elated Waterhouse. “In the last week he has just come on so much in the coat and is really focussed again now. You know with these older horses they take a little longer to reach their peak but Theseo is almost back to his best now.”
“You know before the race Nash (Rawiller) told me that Theseo was not all that well suited today with the track downgraded to heavy, but it shows just what a good horse he is.”
Theseo was taken straight to the lead by Rawiller but at the midway mark became a little concerned with the horse's action.
“He was bowling along nicely then at the 800m he became unbalanced and not stepping out properly in the going near the fence. At that stage I thought I was in real trouble, but as soon as I moved him a few horses off the fence, he travelled a lot better,” said Rawiller.
“Once I straightened up, I knew he would not get beaten and was always confident that I had Metal Bender covered.”
Theseo has now earned over $3 million in stakes from 11 career wins, five at Group 1 level.
Waterhouse stated after the race that Theseo would next head to the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick before another crack at the Group 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, a race he ran fifth behind Maldivian in 2008.
The Chris Waller-trained pair of Metal Bender and Triple Honour both ran creditable races.
Cox Plate-bound Metal Bender travelled on the fence behind the pace and although under pressure before the home turn, loomed up menacingly along the inside of Theseo in the home straight.
For a stride or two it looked as if Metal Bender would make a race of it with the winner but was safely held in the last 100m.
Triple Honour got back mid race but finished the race off well as did staying mare Purple. Both are on track for good campaigns.
