Strawberry Creams Furious Field
Saturday, 4 September 2010: The Gai Waterhouse-trained three-year-old filly jumped smartly from her wide barrier and taken straight to the lead by rider Nash Rawiller who controlled the tempo from that point.
Topping the rise, Rawiller gave the filly her head and she responded with a strong kick that enabled her to get a winning break to just hold off the Peter Snowden-trained Divorces in a close finish with the race favourite Parables in third place.
“She's a maiden no more,” exclaimed a jubilant Gai Waterhouse after the race. “I told Nash to make sure he got the filly moving early form the barriers and get up on the speed as she had become a little tardy early in her races.”
“She is a very good, Group 1 placed filly,” said Waterhouse. “She will now go to the Group 1 Flight Stakes before campaigning in Melbourne.”
Rawiller was seen at his best on More Strawberries, her win due in large part to his decisive move in the early stages of the race which played against the chances of the backmarkers that included the short priced favourite Parables.
In a slowly run race, Parables settled down at the rear of the field however approaching the home turn she was pushed six and seven deep when making up ground to challenge.
Once balanced topping the rise she was soon found wanting and just battled to the line to hold out a wall of horses for third place.
Runner-up Divorces was most impressive resuming from a spell. Trained Peter Snowden speaking pre race, indicated her Spring targets were later in her campaign over longer distances such as the Wakeful Stakes and VRC Oaks.
Looking in need of the run, Divorces surprised by racing close to the speed and being the only runner to seriously challenge the winner More Strawberries in the last 50m.
Like the winner, Divorces was a maiden going into the race but on this effort she should soon register a win.
