NZ Racetracks Escape Earthquake Damage

Tuesday, 7 September 2010: There has been superficial damage at both venues, but no structural damage.

Tim Mill, Riccarton Park manger, said today that engineers had inspected all buildings and had given the all clear.

“And the track has suffered no damage either,” Mill said.

"I drove around it on Saturday morning after the initial shake and again on Sunday to check that there had been no irrigation pipes broken, but it was fine.

“We mowed the track and everything is coming along well for the meeting on Saturday week.”

Addington Raceway suffered collapsed suspended ceilings, fallen TVs and a lot of broken glass, but nothing major.

“We have no structural damage,” said racing manager Brian Rabbitt. "And we will be racing on Thursday along with the greyhounds."

Addington Raceway is an official welfare centre for about 200 people, whose homes have been damaged in the quake and the facility is set up to accommodate a lot more if necessary, but their presence will not hinder the race meeting.

“They are being housed in another grandstand and they will not have any affect on the meeting,” Rabbitt said.
