Melbourne Opportunity For Kiwi Apprentices
Wednesday, 8 September 2010: The scholarships reward the three top apprentice from the three major racing regions of NZ with two weeks in Victoria working and riding for a leading trainer.
The scholarships have has awarded to record breaking northern region apprentice James McDonald, Rosie Myers (Central) and Daniel Stackhouse (Southern).
McDonald enjoyed a stellar 2009/10 season when he rode 151 winners. He won eight Group or Listed races and his mounts earned more than $NZ2.2 million prizemoney.
Myers rode 71 winners including two Group and Listed races and Stackhouse had 34 wins including two Group and Listed events.
All expenses for their travel, accommodation and a living allowance will be provided by NZTR as part of their scholarships.
The winners were selected by the NZTR Training and Development Committee and Apprentice Academy tutors.
Meanwhile NZTR is advertising at home and overseas for a new chief steward to head up New Zealand's new and independent Racing Integrity Unit that is being established to bring together integrity functions across the three racing codes.
The Racing Integrity Unit will be charged with protecting and supervising the integrity of the racing industry in NZ with the chief steward to be responsible for the management of racing integrity across all three codes.
The role will also contribute significantly to the development of new rules, practices and policies across all three codes.
