Brereton settled off the speed but cut the corner as horses scouted wide and quickly strode through to the lead.

There he kicked away and set up a winning break as the bright grey powered home in the gloom to score.

Bocuse, who was a fast finishing second in the race last year, again hit the line hard for second while Tasmanian mare I'm A Hussy also ran on strongly to grab third.

Stanzout's trainer Colin Davies, a former Warrnambool resident, was overcome with emotion as his favourite horse took the feature sprint.

“I love it,” Davies beamed. “Warrnambool is such a beautiful place. I used to live here so to win the Wangoom is very special.”

Davies said he set Stanzout for the race following a strong second behind Orbit Express last start and set him for the Wangoom.

But it was a perfect ride by Brereton which ensured the success.

“He's really mixed it with some good horses in the past but today I think Colin has got him back to near his best,” Brereton said. “He was going to win a long way out.”

It was the eighth career win for the grey and took his earnings to almost $600,000.
