Vasil Unlocks Secret In Schweppes
Saturday, 25 October 2008: | | Photo by Racing and Sports | Jockey Danny Brereton rode an intelligent race with some easy midrace sectionals. He handed up the lead to Chairmanoftheboard but held his position on the rails before quickening to share the lead again before the bend.
Around the corner, though, was where the race was won, as he has done so many times before.
Last start the Tony Vail-trained gelding set a scorching pace over 1000m in the Schillaci Stakes but capitulated over the final stages.
Cuddled sharing the front in today's race, though, he had the mid-race breather before skipping away around the bend and scoring an easy win over Bel Mer and the fast finishing Mr Baritone.
It was his fifth win from six starts at the track and his ninth from just 12 in his career but his biggest success to date.
He's got a very high cruising speed but went too fast last start, Vasil said. I did something I normally wouldn't do and galloped him yesterday just to take the edge off him. He's too brilliant. But it was a excellent ride.
Lucky Secret, a five-year-old son of Cox Plate winner Rubiton, has had his share of problems as well as having bled once.
Vasil is mindful if it happens again the classy galloper's career is over but with careful management should give his owners plenty of fun over the next few seasons.
If the horse is looked after he'll race until he's nine years old.
Although tempted Vasil is reluctant to target the Hong Kong Sprint because of his former bleeding attack, and will look for a race at Flemington over Cup week.
