Sing Back On Song at Taree
Story By by Gary Crispe
Friday, 17 October 2008: Prepared by Kuru Heta on the coast, Singtom returns to Taree today for the Krambach meeting where he boasts a good record at the track.
The gelding is backing up from last weekend's far tougher Port Macquarie Cup and although back in journey should prove hard to hold out over the mile.
After finishing seventh fresh-up Singtom put the writing on the wall with a fast finishing third here over 1267m.
He then stepped up to 1400m at Taree and although carrying 59kg he proved too strong, circling the field out wide and going on for a half length win.
Next start he tackled the same journey at Coffs Harbour, and with 58.5kg settled well back and saved ground along the inside turning, bursting through and scoring a head win.
He brought up the hat-trick at his next start over 1800m in the Port Macquarie Cup Prelude, settling off the pace before hooking out wide in the straight and running on strongly, winning by a half length over Leica Dance.
In the Port Macquarie Cup, over 2000m, he settled worse than midfield on the fence and was there turning but only battled home, finishing eighth and beaten 6.3 lengths behind Delago Star.
Today he backs up a week later and drops back to the mile, but meets a field rated around half a dozen lengths easier.
He carries the minimum weight, he has drawn for a good run on the inside and a genuine pace should see him secure a good run there throughout.
He has a win and a placing from two starts at the track and is worth another chance in this easier grade.
The Bob Milligan-trained Chaperon Bay has been super consistent this campaign and with his light weight looks the biggest danger.
The gelding was a winner here five back before a third over 1406m at Grafton, second at Port Macquarie over 1412m, fourth there over 1200m two starts back then third there over 1400m last time out.
Today he meets a tougher field but drops in weight after the claim for Vicky Schubert and has drawn well in barrier five.
This is his home track, where he has an excellent record - five wins and two placings from seven starts.
He is yet to tackle this trip but should give a big sight with the light weight.
Eireplay is another super consistent type who is also stepping up to the mile for the first time.
It's hard to knock his form – two wins and five placings from his last eight starts – including a last start placing over 1200m at Port Macquarie last weekend.
He jumps to the mile today and also rises in weight but meets a field rated a couple of lengths easier and can run a forward race again.
Our Mr Lord hit the line well at Canterbury last start, finishing third over 1550m after turning worse than midfield.
He has been hard to follow and is yet to win beyond 1400m but gets his chance in this line-up.
Stormy Lee finished at the tail last start at Port Macquarie but his previous form would see him one of the leading chances in this, so may be worth including at each-way odds in the multiples.
