Tuesday, 14 October 2008: In recent years Goodwin trained two noted country middle distance performers, Dancing Sun and Fair Trial.

Dancing Sun, a son of Celestial Dancer, was owned by a partnership including Paul and trained at a complex in the Gresford district near Singleton.

Dancing Sun won 11 races for Goodwin. They included two in succession in the Muswellbrook Cup by 2.5 lengths and a race at Randwick by six.

Those wins were followed by three successive outings at Randwick that resulted in a short head second, a mid field finish in the Villiers Stakes and a second in the Tattersall's Club Cup.

Following a move to Scone, Goodwin in more recent times had good success with Fair Trial, another horse he part –owned.

Set to race on the Muswellbrook Cup program on Melbourne Cup day next month, Fair Trial has won only four of his 56 starts but he has been second in the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup, Taree Gold Cup and Armidale Cup and fourth in the Newcastle Gold Cup.

Paul Goodwin was one of the many skilled horsemen to emerge from the Walcha region of NSW.

Besides being good horse trainer, he was highly regarded in his early years as a first class polocrosse player and camp drafting competitor.

His brother Morris was a successful country jockey who ode the brilliant sprinter Docket in many of his 17 wins.
