Perry found it hard to accept that a last start Group One winner of one of Australia's most famous staying races could not secure a start in last Saturday's Caulfield Cup.

Even with a penalty for winning the Metropolitan at Randwick on October 4 Newport was still left at 20th on the final order of entry and as such was drawn as the second emergency.

It just wasn't Perry's day last Saturday as Newport was left in his box despite two scratchings from the Caulfield Cup and his good sprinter Biscayne bay finished third in the International Sprint after looming as the winner in h straight.

It means nothing now that Newport would have started in the Caulfield Cup if late scratching Zagreb had been ruled out before the 8am deadline.

Newport is currrently 33rd on the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup and may still need to win the Cathay Pacific Cup and pick up another penalty to be assured of a start.

Top Sydney apprentice peter Wells recorded his first career Group One win on Newport in the Metropolitan and was booked for the Caulfield Cup but has been replaced on Saturday by Nash Rawiller.

Rawiller rode Newport to a surprise first-up win over 1400m at Newcastle but will not be bale to ride the grey should he gain a Melbourne Cup start as he is too heavy for the grey's 51.5kg.

Perry said he made up for missing a Caulfield Cup start by giving Newport a testing 2400m workout at Flemington last Saturday morning.

"He worked well and is looking great," Perry said.
