Paul Perry Questioned Over High Bicarb Sample

Saturday, 25 October 2008: The stewards acted on a report from Racing Analytical Services that the pre race blood sample taken from El Zegri had been confirmed with a level of TC02 in plasma in excess of the allowable threshold under the rules of 36mmol/l.

tewards interviewed trainer Paul Perry and stable foreman Shannon Perry and subsequently ordered the gelding's withdrawal at 10.56am.

A referee sample will be sent to an independent laboratory for analysis.

The late scratching of Chinchilla Rose from her race was approved on veterinary advice.

In other early stewards reports from Moonee Valley:-

RACE 1: A subsequent veterinary examination of Allied Force revealed the horse to be suffering from respiratory distress.

RACE 2: Damien Oliver explained that his mount Our Joan Of Arc jumped away awkwardly and then raced greenly and was having some difficulty racing anti-clockwise and at no stage in the straight was able to gain clear running when held in a pocket.

He added that in his opinion Our Joan of Arc would have been more competitive if the filly was able to get into the clear and be given some daylight to finish off its race. A post race veterinary examination of Our Joan of Arc revealed no abnormalities.

A post race veterinary examination of Rose Darmore revealed the filly to have sustained a laceration to its off hind pastern.

RACE 3: When questioned regarding the performance of Returntosender today her rider Luke Nolen explained that the stable elected to run the filly today based on her track work last Tuesday morning and was of the view that the filly did not feel right in its action and all indications were that she would now be sent for a spell.

RACE 5: Cocinero lost its off fore plate during the running. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on Cocinero, apprentice Nick Hall explained that he wasn't given any specific instructions and outlined that when his mount was a little slow to begin he elected to go back given that there was good speed in the race .

He felt that if he endeavoured to go forward in these circumstances it would have been detrimental to the horse's chances.

When questioned regarding the performance of Typhoon Zed his rider Corey Brown explained that the gelding was very disappointing and that the horse felt lethargic prior to the race and over the final 100m commenced to stop and indicated that the horse may be in need of a spell.

A post race veterinary examination of Typhoon Zed revealed the gelding to be lame in the near fore leg. Trainer Tim Martin was advised a veterinary certificate of fitness is required prior to racing again.

Martin indicated that he would advise the stewards of the results of a subsequent veterinary examination on Sunday.
