PORT MACQUARIE: Melbourne Beckons Delago Star
Story By Ken Gentles
Monday, 13 October 2008: | | Kim Waugh | Delago Star retained the race after a protest by Tye Angland, the rider of runner up Black Piranha over incidents in the last 350m was dismissed by stewards.
Angland alleged that Delago Star (Grant Buckley) had interfered with his mount at the top of the straight and again at the 250m point and it was a 50-50 call by stewards to dismiss his protest.
“We decided to dismiss the protest as we deemed that Agland was trying to get through between Delago Star and Parfumier when there was not a full run there and Delago Star was not the cause of Black Piranha being checked,” said chief steward Drew Smith.
Buckley gave Delago Star a perfect run behind a very quick speed set by Want A Bet, ensuring the race was a real staying test.
“I had a great run in the race but nearly ran straight into the back of Peter Wells on Parfumier,” Buckley said.
“When I got clear though he let down well and I was able to get a little break on Black Piranha and win the race.”
Trainer Kim Waugh had discussed a Melbourne trip with Buckley for Delago Star prior to the race and it seems he will join her good filly Kimillsy at the carnival.
It was a record day with a crowd of more than 8000 packing the track and TAB turnover topping $2.2 million, much to the joy of major sponsor Carlton.
“Port Macquarie Cup day meeting was a phenomenal success and is getting bigger and better. We are thrilled to have been sponsors now for 25 years,” said Carlton's regional manager Ray Spurr.
