PERTH: Bailey Takes Early Series Lead

Monday, 13 October 2008: Bailey, riding for local Western Australia trainer Lindsey Smith, trailed the leader for most of the 1400-metre event before a well-timed run gave him the verdict over Victorian Harry Hillier, riding Shipyard, and Luke Cumberland from NSW aboard Oscar Wildly.

Local rider Jarrad Noske finished fourth on Rich Ken.

Bailey's efforts were praised by Capuchin's trainer, who will now aim the gelding at the $100,000 Northam Cup.

"That was a brilliant ride from young Scott and I wish him all the best for his future in Adelaide," Smith said.

Bailey was overjoyed by the victory after a 'shaky' start to the race.

"Once I missed the start I didn't panic and coming to the home bend he was travelling really well," Bailey said. "It's great to have a win like this as it bolsters my career."

The National Apprentice Series will now head to NSW with the second round at Canterbury on November 12.
