Double Dead-Heat In Valley Finale

Saturday, 25 October 2008: Five horses went to the line locked together in the dimming light of Cox Plate day, the judge not being able to separate Miss Badoura and Bird of Fire who dead heated for first.

His task wasn't any easier trying to separate the runners for third, with Princess Marizza and Dane Julia out wide, who shared third place, just ahead of Soul Diva who dived along the fence and finished fifth, but beaten less than a head.

Trainers Of Miss Badoura and Bird Of Fire, Leon Corstens and Tony Vasil, both ended the day with one and a half winners each and were content to share the spoils in the last.

Corstens earlier won with first starter Starspangledbanner in the Inglis Juvenile while Vasil had taken the Schweppes Stakes with Lucky Secret.

But the day belonged to Flemington trainer Mark Kavanagh, who saddled up four runners at Moonee Valley and won the Group 1 Cox Plate with Maldivian, the Group 2 AAMI Vase with Whobegotyou, the Group 2 Jayco Crystal Mile with Sea Battle and finished with a minor in the last race with Princess Marizza.

He also won with his sole runner at Morphettville in Queen's Kiss.

Michael Rodd's winning treble on the three Kavanagh Moonee Valley winners easily had him home in the jockey's challenge as favourite.
