COX PLATE BARRIER DRAW
Tuesday, 21 October 2008: | | Alamosa | .For the first time in the history of the Tatts Cox Plate the all important barrier draw was conducted under a new format that saw Racing Victoria chief steward Terry Bailey draw horses by lot and a representative for each runner was then asked to select their own barrier.
Trainer Mick Price was second choice and had no hesitation selecting gate seven, the most successful barrier in Cox Plate history.
Ten horses have won from barrier seven since the race was first run in 1922 including the past two winners – Fields of Omagh and El Segundo.
Barrier six is the second most successful alley with a total of eight winners. Trainer Mark Kavanagh selected gate six for his runner Maldivian.
Jockey Nash Rawiller, the rider of Theseo, surprised when he nominated the outside barrier 12 for his mount when several other inside gates were still available.
Connections of several runners ignored barrier one until it was selected by Dwayne Dunn, the rider of Zarita.
The favourite Princess Coup will start from gate nine while trainer Kris Lees was happy to select gate two for his filly Samantha Miss to ensure she is not covering ground from the start.
