Border Hoppers Converge On International Sprint
Friday, 17 October 2008: | | Photo by Racing and Sports | Sprinters from Queensland, Sydney and Adelaide are converging on some local talent in an open race where Sunburnt Land hold favouritism at $3.80, ahead of Sydney galloper Aichi at $4.60.
Four of the runners are from South Australia, including Jon O'Connor's Blahnik, who will test the waters in tough grade tomorrow as opposed to the easier Listed Durbridge Stakes back on his home track at Morphettville.
O'Connor decided the handicap conditions of tomorrow's race in Melbourne better suited his galloper and is confident he will run a big race at odds.
“If I had had a crystal ball and known there would have been only six runners in the Durbridge I might have thought about it,” O'Connor said.
“But after winning the Wylie Stakes last start we decided to freshen him for this race. He's up to the grade on his best form, he goes best fresh and the 1100m is his pet trip.”
Blahnik won at Caulfield in the autumn with an inside run in the Pink Ribbon Cup and O'Connor would love a similar effort from Glen Boss from barrier one tomorrow.
The gelding was sent over the border last night and arrived at Flemington this morning.
He is an $18.00 with TAB Sportsbet, while the other South Australian – Grand Duels, Morgan Dollar and Tramuntana are $8.00, $9.00 and $26.00 respectively.
