Blake Shinn To Miss Derby Meeting
Story By Chris Scholtz
Saturday, 25 October 2008: | | Blake Shinn | Shinn was found guilty of careless riding on the Gai Waterhouse-trained Rockwood in the Jayco Mile.
Stewards found Shinn allowed Rockwood to shift in at the 1300m when not sufficiently clear of Pillar Of Hercules resulting that horse having to be checked.
Shinn was suspended for 10 meetings and elected to have the suspension begin immediately so he can resume riding on Melbourne Cup day at Flemington on Tuesday week.
The suspension, covering two city and eight country meetings, expires at midnight on November 4.
In assessing Shinn's penalty the stewards regarded the interference as being in mid-range, which equates to a 10 meeting penalty during the spring carnival.
The stewards reported on several incidents in the $3 million W.S. Cox Plate but had little concern with rough riding during the race.
However they did question Opie Bosson about the disappointing effort by Princess Coup.
Bosson explained that the mare was not suited by the manner in which the race was run in the early stages when he was expecting a faster pace.
He said the mare is far better suited with a fast tempo and added that Princess Coup was under pressure at the 600m.
A veterinary examination of Princess Coup failed to reveal any abnormality.
There were no hard luck stories from jockeys although several found problems during the race with C'est La Guerre the one who should have finished closer as he was unable to improve his position at the 400m and was then held up until the early part of the straight.
Alamosa's rider Craig Newitt momentarily lost the use of his whip entering the straight before regaining it but it made no difference to his finish.
The stewards reported that Theseo over-raced for some distance leaving the straight the first time before being restrained behind the leader Maldivian.
Raheeb lost its off hind plate during the running of the race.
Several runners in other races will be subject to veterinary clearances before they can race again after being found to be lame.
Typhoon Zed was lame in the near fore, Minnesota Shark puled up lame in the off hind and Arapaho Miss was lame in her hindquarters.
