Bauer Penalised 1kg For Melbourne Cup

Thursday, 23 October 2008: The penalty takes the Luca Cumani-trained stayer's weight to 52kg, 7.5kg under weight-for-age for the six-year-old, in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday week.

“Bauer has obviously adapted well since arriving in Australia and was a dominant winner in the Geelong Cup, his first victory at Group level," Carpenter said.

"It was a moderately run race and after sitting wide with cover in running, Bauer had more to give on the line in beating Moatize and Magic Instinct.

"The penalty lifts him ten places in the elimination order to 32nd, one place behind Barbaricus which ran third in last Saturday's BMW Caulfield Cup.”

Bauer's 1kg penalty is in line with most Melbourne Cup penalties issued to Geelong Cup winners over the last 25 years.

However Media Puzzle, the first overseas trained winner of the Geelong Cup, was penalised 1.5kg for his win in 2002 before he went on to win the Melbourne Cup.

Carpenter issued the Godolphin stayer All The Good with a 2kg penalty for the Melbourne Cup following his win in a much stronger Caulfield Cup last Saturday.

Third declarations for the Melbourne Cup close at 10am next Monday.
