BALLINA: Brisbane Next For Surety
Friday, 24 October 2008: | | Josh Jones | Surety has won the Bangalow Cup and Lennox Point Hotel Cup at Ballina in his only two starts for leading local trainer Stephen Lee.
He is proving to be a smart and enjoyable investment for his owner Greg Nash.
“I live in Bangalow so it's always nice to win your home-town Cup,” Nash said.
“We were due to take him up to Brisbane but we just thought we'd give him another run at Ballina and it just happened to be the Lennox Cup.
"He's obviously improved. Stephen has done a good job.”
Lee is now setting Surety for a suitable Brisbane race in the next two weeks.
On Lee's recommendation, Nash purchased the horse from Melbourne.
"He's a big horse and he was very sound, but I think he was fairly lightly raced for a five-year-old; this was only his 15th start," Nash said.
“He is a good doer, he licks his bin out every day and he's definitely got more in him.
Apart from Surety's tendency to over-race at times, Lee was happy with the way the big gelding raced.
"He's got a bit of class about him," he said.
"We'll set him for a metro ace now and try to step him up a little bit."
Surety races boldly from the front and his rider Josh Jones says he can run fast time.
"He's best ridden like that, when his bowling along in front," Jones said.
Jones' win in the Lennox Head Cup capped a successful day for the jockey as he landed three winners from his six rides.
