BAIRNSDALE: Maiden Form Outstanding Guide
Story By Tim Bull
Wednesday, 22 October 2008: | | Pre Eminence | Pre Eminence won his maiden at the track on August 10 and on Saturday took out the Group Three Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield.
Prior to this another Mick Price trainer galloper, Gallica, who won her maiden at Bairnsdale on August 25, progressed on to take out both the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes and the Group One Thousand Guineas!
Given this, perhaps one to watch this weekend is the Robbie Griffiths trained Avionics.
She won her maiden at the same meeting as Gallica and on Saturday pursues black type in the Listed Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley.
* STONY Creek trainer, Ken Fythe, said his stable star, Rockpecker, was a chance to run in this weekend's Sale Cup.
The five year-old finished sixth in Sunday's Seymour Cup after being set an impossible task – caught wide, taken to the lead and then given no peace in front.
“He certainly knew he'd been in a race and it is a fair hike there and back, so I am really going to just wait and make sure he is right before I make a final decision.
“If he's not fully recovered he won't run, there are other options we can look at,” said Ken.
A couple of others to keep an eye on at Sale are Royal Sandhurst, which recently won a Cranbourne trial for Stony Creek trainer, Jack Wilson and Over Quota, a very impressive last start winner for Bairnsdale trainer, Julie Scott.
* AUSTRALIAN racing's most prized piece of silverware will be in South Gippsland next week when the 2009 Melbourne Cup trophy continues its tour towards to Flemington.
Stony Creek Racing Club chief executive, Rob Armstrong, said there was a high level of anticipation within the local community in relation to the October 30 visit.
The best opportunity for Gippsland racing enthusiasts to see the cup will be from 10.30am when it will be displayed at Leongatha Memorial Hall as part of a centre-piece presentation that will showcase the history of thoroughbred racing in South Gippsland.
This will include an exhibition of oil paintings featuring thoroughbred champions, including Melbourne Cup winners, by local artist Janet Thomas; artwork from local school children; screenings of past Melbourne Cups and the famous Stony Creek Triple Dead Heat of 1986.
The Stony Creek Racing Club will also have on display its 2009 cup trophies and information on its various race day packages and memberships. Entry is by gold coin donation.
