Victorian Buyers Dominate Perth Sale
Saturday, 16 February 2008: | | Helenus | The two highest and five of the top ten prices were paid by Victorians during a session which boasted a record session average price of $51,365.
The top price for the night came when leading Mornington trainer Pat Carey went to $210,000 to secure a much admired colt by Helenus.
Catalogued as lot number 23, the bay colt is the second foal from an unraced Woodman half sister to Frank Packer Plate winner Afraah.
The August 2006 foaling was consigned by Yallingup based thoroughbred nursery, Wyadup Valley Farms.
That price exceeded that attained for Lot 11, which was snapped up by Melbourne syndicators Rob and Corinna Slade for $190,000.
By Australia's hottest sire, the first season sire sensation Exceed and Excel, the filly is from the stakes winning and top producing Salmon Leap mare Vintage Dance.
As well as this filly, Vintage Dance has thrown the stakes performers Pittance and Marauder.
Featuring in the family is the stakes winner Fullazz - another Slade graduate purchased from a Magic Millions sale.
Also active tonight were well known Victorians Troy Corstens and Gary Mudgway - buying two lots under the banner of Newmarc and Grange.
One was the Helenus half brother to exciting three-year-old Turing for $155,000.
The second purchase, at $150,000, was for the brother to triple stakes winner and recent Brisbane winner Denmarket.
The highest priced yearling snapped up by a local was lot 40 - a filly by Tale of the Cat.
The Anita Vale Stud offering was purchased by well known Perth owners Lex and Shirley Piper.
All up during tonight's first session over $4.9 million was traded on 96 yearlings at a clearance rate of 72 per cent.
Magic Millions managing director David Chester said the session provided a number of highlights.
"The session kicked away in great style and bidding was strong early," Chester reported.
"There appeared to be a bit of a lull in the middle stages when we didn't sell as many as we would have liked, but thankfully buyers got back into the swing of it late."
"Quality yearlings seemed to attract great interest from a big line of buyers," he added.
"It was particularly pleasing to see buyers from around Australia as well as South Africa, Singapore and Malaysia at the complex tonight and we're heartened to know more are planning on arriving in the coming days as the sale continues."
