Last Word On The Australia Stakes
Friday, 15 February 2008: | | Apache Cat | Speaking at Friday's media conference at Moonee Valley, the owner and former Perth trainer of Lets Go Thommo Stephen Ryan said his horse had improved since his impressive last start win in the Group 2 Carlyon Stakes (1200m) over the Australia Stakes course.
Last year's Goodwood Handicap winner is currently rated a $7 chance and Ryan beleievs he is great value.
I don't think he's up to the best sprinters over here like Miss Andretti but with a bit of luck in running he'll be competitive and he may be able to sneak one if he has a bit more luck, Ryan said.
Colin Davies, the trainer of Lightning Stakes placegetter Stanzout, said today his horse had pulled up well after his fast finishing first-up effort in the Carlyon Stakes and expects him to run well tomorrow.
He was jumping out of skin after that run, Davies said.
A lot of people say to me why do I keep putting him in the deep end, but every time I do he puts his best foot forward.
He hasn't won a Group 1 yet but he's knocking on the door. To be a part of these big races is just a buzz for me - I love it.
Davies trains a small team at Cranbourne alongside the Greg Urell, the trainer of Apache Cat.
I'd love to quinella it with Apache Cat, because I've always loved that horse, he's just the people's favourite.
"Whether we win or run second I'll be happy, Davies said.
Apache Cat's trainer Greg Eurell said his five-year-old star can add to his outstanding second-up record.
His second run is very, very strong normally. Certainly from what I've seen after his first run I don't think he'll disappoint tomorrow, Eurell said.
