Desert War Waits For Apollo Stakes
Story By Chris Scholtz
Sunday, 17 February 2008: | | Desert War | The massive gelding appeared in an exhibition gallop at Randwick on Saturday but Waterhouse admitted he needs more work before resuming in the $250,000 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.
Waterhouse sent out a crack team to gallop between races on Saturday with Desert War commanding all the attention.
The six-time Group One winner worked solo over 600m in 35.46 and will have a barrier trial, possibly next Friday at Randwick, before he resumes.
Stablemates Mutawaajid, Kingda Ka and Sliding Cube also took part in exhibition gallops on Saturday.
Mutawaajid has returned to Waterhouse's stable after his disappointing campign in Engalnd and France for trainer Mick Channon last year.
He worked with Kingda Ka and will have a barrier trial at Randwick on Friday before a decision is made on when he will resume.
Kingda Ka won a barrier trial at Rosehill last week and will be kept fresh for his next start in the $125,000 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on March 1.
Unbeaten filly Sliding Cube also worked alone over 600m in 35.71 in preparation for her return in the $125,000 Light Fingers Stakes at Randwick on March 1.
The Waterhouse team will boast a new addition later this month when leading Tasmanian apprentice Daniel Ganderton joins her stable for a trial period.
Ganderton, who will claim 3kg in Sydney races, fills a vacanacy at Tulloch Lodge after former stable apprentice Josh Parr switched to the Peter Snowden stable at Warwick Farm.
