Wyong Cup Hopes On The Line At Taree
Story By Graham Timbrell
Friday, 18 August 2006: The Listed $130,000 Wyong Rugby League Club Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) will be run on Thursday September 7 and the Taree Cup is perfectly placed to lead into this major provincial race.
The seven horses likely to continue on to the Wyong cup are Windon, Mr Gold Fire, Heavenly Lark, Monsoon Sunrise, Extra Dollars, Gold Lager and Mr Marvellous.
Wyong trainer Neville McBurney will be chasing his fifth Taree cup and is relying on Monsoon Sunrise, beaten a head last year.
Windon, trained at Port Macquarie by Neil Godbolt, won last year’s Muswellbrook cup and added a second trophy to the cabinet when he won the Casino cup last Sunday.
The Victorian trained Mr Gold Fire ploughed through the mud to win the Coffs Harbour cup two weeks ago while the Joan Pracey trained Heavenly Lark has won two of her last four city starts.
Trainer Tas Morton has specifically set Extra Dollars for the Taree and Wyong cups while Gold Lager will start on Sunday under new trainer Anthony Honess.
Gold Lager’s previous trainer, Ken Faulds, recommended the switch to the owner to give the 25 years old Honesss a kick start to his new career.
He has only held a public training licence for a week.
Mr Marvellous is trained at Wyong by Stephen Farley and ran a great cup trial when second in the Taree Cup Prelude on August 8.
“I really want to win the Taree cup then see this horse go on to the Wyong cup,” Farley said.
“He was the first winner I trained and is a bit special.
“The horse is now seven and this might be his last chance in these type of races.”
