Weir to strilke at Seymour
Story By by Gary Crispe
Sunday, 13 August 2006: The five-year-old, prepared by Darren Weir at Ballarat, has had four runs since a year long spell.
She returned with an emphatic win over 1200m at Mildura, signaling Weir has her right again as she sprinted away with a soft 4.3 length win.
She then stepped straight up to 1500m at Bendigo and disappointed when eighth, beaten 3.6 lengths, behind Cica Cica.
Weir gave her three weeks between runs before stepping her out again over 1000m at Swan Hill where, back on top of the ground, she settled well back before hitting the line hard and finishing third behind her heavily backed stablemate Approach The Bench.
Today she meets an easier line-up and only rises 1kg in the weights.
In her favour though is the longer journey and if she gets relatively firm footing she should prove hard to hold out.
The mare has tons of ability on her day and from barrier four should be given every chance to return to winning form.
Consistent mare Sunset de Lago comes into the race with excellent form and although beaten last start in similar grade looks the biggest danger.
The mare, prepared by Craig Conron at Geelong, was a 1000m winner in Class 1 company fresh-up at Geelong before skipping a few grades but racing well when finishing runner-up in a Class 4 there after drawing off the track.
She then tackled a Class 4 over 1300m at Wangaratta and started favourite but didn’t have the best of luck, finishing third, just over a length from Madam Delia.
The mare has been consistent right through her career and although yet to win beyond 1100m probably should have gone close over today’s trip last start when luckless.
She has drawn a shade wide today but with Craig Newitt in the saddle and with just 53kg she should be finishing hard.
Maggie Bee is a handy mare who can improve sharply second-up today.
Prepared by Charlie Goggin at Geelong, Maggie Bee strung together three wins early in her last campaign, the first two in Tasmania before heading across to the mainland and winning at Caulfield.
She then finished fourth beaten less than a length in the Cockram Stakes before a below par effort in the Let’s Elope Stakes, after which she went for a break.
This campaign she resumed up the straight track at Flemington and ran well below her best, finishing over 10 length last behind Temporalay.
I guess the jury is out whether she has come back but she was a second-up winner last campaign and she will not only strip fitter but may be looking for the longer journey now.
She meets a fire easier race this time and is well placed after the 3kg claim for apprentice Nicholas Hall.
Her chances improve if she manages to strike a wet track.
Madam Delia was a good winner last start and looks an each-way chance again.
Over 1300m at Wangaratta, she came from the tail to score and in the process beat a few of her rivals today, including Sunset De Lago.
Although she meets her worse at the weights she still drops 1kg for today’s race and has drawn for a good run with cover in barrier one.
She will no doubt he hitting the line hard again today.
Elle’s Angel, stablemate to Marnie D’Or, can also feature with her light weight.
