TASMANIA: Kat's Clause Takes Top Award

Wednesday, 16 August 2006: She was announvced the winner at a gala function at Tattersall’s Park function centre at Elwick.

The Royston Carr-trained mare capped her outstanding season with an emphatic win in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes at Caulfield that was one of three victories she accomplished interstate.

Kats Clause also won in Tasmania and was a luckless third behind Con’s Amy in the $80,000 weight-for-age Bow Mistress Stakes in Hobart during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.

She won with 19-1/2 votes from the nine judges and was well clear of the John Blacker-trained mare Nuclear Free (8-1/2) with Devonport Cup winner Bay Ritz a close-up third.

The top three-year-old award went to the David Miller-trained filly Darcenell with 17 votes and well clear of Uzigal (12-1/2) with Tasmanian Derby winner Esterel third on 12 votes.

There were no surprises with the top two-year-old award which went to outstanding filly Rustia.

The Charlie Goggin-trained filly won six of her seven starts including the unofficial 2YO Triple Crown comprising the $50,000 Elwick Stakes; the $100,000 Magic Millions Class and the $150,000 Gold Sovereign Stakes in the space of two weeks.

The Troy Blacker-trained colt Regal Chivas was second with 17 votes and the Mick Hart-trained filly Off With Ya Kilt was third on 8 votes and they were the only three two-year-olds to poll votes from the nine judges.

Inductions into the Tasmanian Racing Hall of Fame were another major component of the gala awards night.

Well-performed galloper Strop and former Caulfield Cup winner Beer Street were popular inductees.

Former great hoop Frank Tocknell and present-day rider Stephen Maskiell were announced as inductees in the jockey category.

Prominent breeders and respected racing administrators Barry Larter and Graeme McLeod were inducted in the associates’ category and the late Mal Gerrard and Brian Lomasney, who retired last year, were popular inductees in the trainer category.
