St Basil Wins Trial As Beasley Battles Flu
Story By Chris Scholtz
Thursday, 17 August 2006: | | Danny Beasley | St Basil won the 960m trial by three quarters of a length in a slick time of 56.83 seconds, the fastest of the five heats run over the distance.
He was ridden by Michael Cahill but trainer Bevan Laming is yet to confirm who will be riding the big grey when he resumes in the Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on August 26.
Cahill is leaving Brisbane this weekend for Hong Kong to prepare for the start of a three month riding stint.
Laming had nominated St Basil for Saturday's Premiere Stakes at Rosehill but decided the gelding needed a trial before resuming next week.
Meanwhile Danny Beasley expects to get back into the saddle at the Warwick Farm barrier trials on Friday after suffering from a bout of the 'flu.
Beasley missed Wednesday's Warwick Farm and today's Hawkesbury program but is keen to ride the Guy Walter-trained Court's In Session when he trials on Friday.
Court's In Session will be having his second trial since Walter brought him back into work after he lost form in the autumn.
Walter also has the Warwick Stakes pencilled in for Court's In Session if he pleases in Friday's trial.
He is drawn in the first heat over 1200m against the 2004 BMW winner Grand Zulu, who will be making his reappearance in Australia for his original trainer Gwenda Markwell after an unsuccessful season in Hong Kong.
The heat also feature Queensland Derby winner Ice Chariot, who is another slated to resume in the Warwick Stakes.
Walter's Doncaster Handicap winner Patezza will also trial on Friday over 800 metres.
