Spielmeister looks the real thing
Saturday, 12 August 2006: David Hayes believes he may be forced to show his hand earlier than he wants with talented four-year-old Spielmeister who he has entered for all the major races this spring.
Hayes said he wanted to avoid the same predicament he found himself in last year ago with the lightly-weighted Confectioner who missed out on getting a run in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
The winner of three races from eight starts, Spielmeister remained unbeaten in two runs this campaign when he charged away to land today's Langtree & Dwyer Hcp (1410m) at Flemington.
The Singspiel entire was convincing, easily accounting for Roubechon and Bust Up.
"He showed a very good trait the way he was able to accelerate and run away," Hayes said.
"He is a very smart horse in the making."
Hayes said he may now jump Spielmeister up in class and run him in the Group Two Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September 2.
"I have entered him in everything ... but I don't want the Confectioner problem of last year of having a horse with so little weight that he can't get into anything," he said.
"I have given him the two soft kills now so I might put my head on the line next time.
"He is a very classy young horse but of course the moment I prove to the handicapper he is a weight-for-age horse he will be weighted like one.
"I am between a rock and a hard place at the moment."
Spielmeister was the last leg of winning treble for jockey Craig Williams who also posted wins on Sans Lee for Mick Kent and Spielmeister's stablemate Growl.
