General fit for hot handicap
Friday, 11 August 2006: | | Photo by Racing and Sports | But at the same time the Tony Vasil stable has targeted the race for honest sprinter General Conclusion to take advantage of the lack of fitness of some of the stars.
The five-year-old, who has raced through the winter, is rock hard fit and in-form and according to the stable, could be the blowout horse.
“He’s not a star but he’s very honest and is racing in good form,” Vasil’s assistant trainer Leigh Dunstone said.
“We targeted this race because he gets in right down in the weights and meets horses which are nowhere near wound-up.”
General Conclusion has two wins and a placing from his last five starts with much bigger weights and was a strong winner over tomorrow’s course and distance two starts back.
Last start he drew wide and was caught off the track throughout, knocking up to finish ninth behind Maybe Better at Caulfield.
“He had no luck last start and given his run just had to stop,” Dunstone said. “I would forget the run. He has run well at his only two starts on the straight track (the other was when runner-up in the Creswick Stakes) and he’s drawn well.
“We expect him to race well and if it rains he’ll be even better suited.”
General Conclusion has drawn barrier 10, will carry 53kg and will be ridden by Ryan Maloney.
He is a $14.00 chance with the latest TAB Sportsbet market on the sixth line of betting.
The warm favourite is another horse who has a fitness edge and has a liking for Flemington, the Lee Freedman-trained Bel Danoro at $3.40.
Chetwynd South ($4.80), Apache Cat ($6.00), Valedictum ($8.50) and El Segundo ($10.00) are the next four in betting and all are resuming.
