CANBERRA: Racecallers Will Honour Tony Campbell

Friday, 18 August 2006:  | | Tony Campbell | The new feature race meeting has been introduced to honour the late Tony Campbell, who had a 29-year association with Canberra racing until he lost a courageous battle with cancer in May.
Leading NSW race callers Ian Craig, Josh Fleming and Matthew Hill, Alan Thomas from Brisbane and Greg Miles from Melbourne to share the race calling duties.
The highlight race of the meeting on the revolutionary synthetic Acrton track will be the $40,000 ACTTAB Tony Campbell Cup, an open handicap over 1280 metres.
The supporting feature race will be the $22,000 Sky Channel Race Callers Cup, a 1206m class three handicap.
Sponsorship support for the race meeting was derived locally and nationally from ActewAGL, The Carbine Club ACT, CSR Gyprock, M & M Rolfe Property Services, Pages Event Equipment and Racing Victoria Limited.
The Cancer Council ACT will also be on course raising much needed funds for the single largest fundraising and awareness event for cancer in Australia, Daffodil Day.
The race meeting will be held annually during the winter on the successful Acton track as a continuing tribute to Tony Campbell.
THe meeting willalso be the last for Damien Foley in his capacity of chief executive of Canberra racing Club.
Foley is leaving Canberra after more than a decade with the CRC to take chrage of a major licensed club on the NSW south coast.
