Man o’War day at Belmont

Sunday, 14 May 2017: Rain, and quite a bit of it, is expected to fall on Man o’War’s parade today but the race will stay on the turf regardless. This should be very much to the liking of Dermot Weld as his Zhukova (by Fastnet Rock) loves it so not only does Weld have a knack of getting his horses into the right race in the US but the weather gods may assist. Zhukova is 5/1 in the Morning Line and if you can get that go for it. Wake Forest is German-bred and should be able to handle it – 5/2, and Sadler’s Joy was quoted at 3/1 in the Morning Line.

The first of the graded races is the Peter Pan Gr 3 for the 3yos over 1800m and there doesn’t seem to be much between Timeline 7/5 and Master Plan 2/1. There’s only 6 horses in the field so not much value here.

The Beaugay Gr 3 is set for the turf course but that may be switched depending on the going. It’s over 1700m for f&m and at present has a field of 8, headed by Miss Temple City who is preparing for a return to Royal Ascot. She was scratched last time because of the wet track so may be a doubtful. Currently on 2/1. Chilean-bred Dacita is on 3/1 but she too may not like the wet, and Time and Motion is on 4/1.

The Ruffian Gr 2 for f&m is over 1600m with 5 runners and here there are two high points – Highway Star on 5/2 and High Ridge Road on 2/1.

Again the weather may cause some alterations to these fields.

At Santa Anita no rain and the Gr 3 Lazaro Barrera Stakes for the 3yos over 1400m with a field of 6. Bob Baffert and Mike Smith team up again with American Anthem 2/1 with Aristocratic on 5/2 for Simon Callaghan and Rafael Bejerano.
