US Foal Crop Decline Continues
Monday, 23 August 2010: A registered foal crop of 27,000 would be the smallest since 1973 when 26,811 foals were registered.
The 2011 projection is a drop of 10% from last year's estimate of 30,000 registered foals.
The foal-crop projection is computed by using Reports of Mares Bred received by August 1 for the 2010 breeding season.
In other US breeding news the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. has consolidated the select portion of its premier 2YO auction schedule in 2011 combining the February and March sales into one event.
The sale will be on March 15-16 and does away with the February select sale that had kicked off the 2YO selling season in America but was considered too early by many vendors.
“As 2-year-old consignors have fewer horses to offer than in years past, OBS will concentrate its efforts in showcasing select 2-year-olds in March,” said Tom Ventura, OBS general manager and director of sales.
The February select sale's gross, average price and median price have declined for the last two years with the 66 horses sold this year the lowest total for the auction since OBS took over the sale from the Florida Breeders' Sales Co more than 20 years ago.
In addition to the March sale OBS will conduct the winter mixed sale (Jan. 18-19), the spring sale of 2-year-olds in training (April 18-21), the June sale of 2-year-olds and horses of racing age (June 21-22), the August yearling sale (Aug. 23-25), and the fall mixed sale (Oct. 18-20).
