Colombia Has The Class
Monday, 30 August 2010: With a pedigree to die for, being by 13 time champion sire Zabeel out of the 3 time champion broodmare Eight Carat, Colombia is a full brother to the champion G1 winners Octagonal, Marquise, Diamond Lover, Kaapstad and Mouwad.
His sibling sisters have produced another 5 G1 winners - Don Eduardo, Tristalove, Antwerp, Danewin and Shower Of Roses.
Colombia was the record priced yearling at the 1998 Karaka Sales but was unraced due to injury.
At stud, he has had 138 runners for 69 winners with a number of high profile new winners breaking through the maiden ranks in recent weeks.
In recent weeks nine of his progeny have won races including Kid Colombus, Govind (2 wins), Toby Cee, Cap Colombie, Inevitable (2 wins), Best Treasure (Macau), Oforawesome, Magic Haul (Singapore) and Stand Up.
Included in this group are a number of promising new winners including Govind who has had 2 wins and five placings from eight starts since March and is shaping up for black type this season.
Govind, a 4YO out of Aimee's Girl (Justice Prevails) is trained by Rick Wells and Peter Bell for a syndicate which includes his breeder Alan Waldron.
Aimee's Girl is a half sister to Aimee's Idol, a stakeswinner by Colombia from his first crop to race. She won $114,940 and six races including the Waikato Sprint with placings in the Waikato Foxbridge Plate and the Tauranga Classic.
Another of the Colombia youngsters to break through the maiden ranks is the 3YO Oforawesome.
Oforawesome is out of the mare Landvetter (Felix The Cat) while in Singapore all eyes are on Magic Haul, who is out of a half sister to the VRC G3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Sterling Prince.
Magic Haul has had a win and two placings since June.
His dam is Golden Princess (Kashani) who also produced Mercury Angel (Colombia) who has now won five races in the South Island.
Golden Princess is due to foal to Colombia again this spring for owner Max Armstrong who also owns and races Sterling Princes.
Sterling Prince is already in Australia preparing for the spring racing.
Colombia stands at Longspring Stud at a fee of $3000 + gst.
