Dewar Race Down To The Wire

Friday, 25 July 2008: The Dewar Award, which celebrates the champion NZ-based sire by combined earnings in Australia and New Zealand, looked to be safely at the mercy of Waikato Stud's outstanding sire O'Reilly at this time last week, when the combined earnings figure was found to be $48,319 in his favour.

"It's remarkable to think Zabeel has held this title for the past 12 seasons straight – a tally surpassing his own sire, Sir Tristram, who won nine Dewar Awards," NZTM Executive Manager Adrian Clark said.

"Not quite so well publicised is the fact that O'Reilly is also on the verge of toppling Volksraad from the grip he's had on the NZ Stallion Premiership (Grosvenor Award) for the past six seasons."

Clark said New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing will release "some pretty impressive statistics" relating to the success of New Zealand-bred Horses during this season.

"There's no better advertisement for our great product than international racetrack success and the Kiwi horse has had more than its' share of that over the past 12 months," Clark said.
