Average Well Up At Saratoga

Tuesday, 5 August 2008: In all, 60 yearlings sold at an average of $302,667, which was 15.8% up on the corresponding session last year.

The number of horses to make $500,000 or more was also up, from six to nine.

And the high price of $1.5million was up on the $1.05m paid for last year's session topper.

However the gross dipped slightly to $18.16million (from $19.867m) on the back of the pass in rate rising from 21.6% to 29.4%.

The top price of $1.5m was given for a Storm Cat filly from Totemic, which was consigned by Hill 'n Dale Agency and purchased by Team Valor.

An A P Indy colt (ex Pyramid Lake) also topped the seven figures, eventually being knocked down for $1.2million.

Darley's John Ferguson was also active, buying the day's third highest priced lot, a colt by Distorted Humor from Stupendous Miss for $900,000.

Ferguson in fact purchased four of the nine lots to reach $500,000 or more, with his others being an A P Indy colt from Platinum Tiara for $700,000, a Songandaprayer-What A Knight colt for $550,000 and a colt by Indian Charlie from Near Mint for $500,000.
