PORT MACQUARIE: Top Filly Ready For Queen Of The North
Story By Ken Gentle
Tuesday, 19 February 2008: | | Ross Stitt | Heavenly Glow has not raced on slow or heavy going but any fars about her being susceptible in those conditions were allayed last Sunday when she won a barrier trial over 1000m on a very heavy track at Taree.
She had no trouble getting through the going and according to her trainer Ross Stitt is spot on to take out her first feature race at just her tenth start.
Heavenly Glow has won four of her nine starts and is potentially the best filly to emerge on mid north coast tracks for several seasons.
She has an amazing finishing burst and while Stitt says she is going to be at her best over longer trips has her ready to sprint fresh over 1200m as she has not raced since winning successive 1400m races at Port Macquarie in October.
In her latest win she beat the talented galloper Seen Im, a subsequent winner of the three open handicaps in succession.
Stitt was setting Heavenly Glow for a trip to Tasmania for the Tasmanian Oaks – to be run on Sunday – before his plans were scuttled by the EI travel restrictions and he had to give the filly a let-up after her last win.
If she wins the Queen Of The North - a 77 ratings band handicap for fillies and mares - Stitt will be tempted to step her up to open company for the first time when the re-scheduled 2007 Port Macquarie Cup is run on March 7.
The Port Cup has been reduced form 2000m to 1400m after being postponed last October during the suspension of racing and would be a perfect step for Heavenly Glow if she wins on Thursday.
