The nomination of Mentality for the Expressway is a surprise as the Group One winner is currently based at Flemington and is also nominated for Saturday's Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield.

Hawkes has also nominated his Sydney-based pair Malcolm and Danzippo for the Expressway Stakes while considering his options with Mentality.

“I'm not sure where Mentality is running just yet,” Hawkes said from Melbourne today.

Hawkes said there are still a lot of problems associated with shipping horses from one state to another due to post EI-regulations being enforced by the Department of Primary Industries.

“There is still a lot of stuffing around so I'm not sure what we'll do with him,” he said.

Mentality, Malcolm and Danzippo stayed under the care of Hawkes when he ecided to resign from his position as head trainer for the Ingham family's Crown Lodge stable last year as they are owned by other clients.

The Ingham-owned Paratroopers, a horse Hawkes took to Group One success, will have his second start for new Crown Lodge head treainer Peter Snowden in the Expressway Stakes.

The Expressway Stakes will really give the Sydney autumn carnival a strong kick start with five Group One winners among the 15 entries – Racing To Win, Bentley Biscuit, Mentality, Sniper's Bullet and Paratroopers.
