Late fee for Secdolrue at Launceston

Tuesday, 19 February 2008: Secdolrue (Dolphin Street- Secolo x Snippets) scored a very impressive win on debut in Launceston last Sunday scoring by six lengths in slick time over 1100 metres.
The well-bred gelding showed good early speed to lead and when challenged nearing the home turn by the well-backed Brierly, McShane's youngster answered the challenge and extended his lead to the line.
He stopped the clock at 1.05.86, which was almost two seconds quicker than the other 2YO maiden winner (Van Hardyards) and he ran home his last 800 metres in 46.89.
Those times were virtually equal to those set by Le Mont Blanc in the class four (1100m) on the same program.
McShane said Secdolrue had shown above average ability from the day he came into work at his Broadmarsh stables.
“We thought he was pretty smart because his trackwork leading up to this race has been quite outstanding,” McShane said.
“I've worked him with a couple of my older and quite well-performed horses and he has been able to match it with them so we were quietly confident he'd do well today,” the trainer said.
McShane purchased Secdolrue at last year's Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale in Launceston for a modest $14,000.
“We never intended to come away with a Dolphin Street youngster but when we had a good look at him we decided he was one of the picks of the sale, so we were quite excited about buying him for only $14, 000,” he said.
Secdolrue was ridden by McShane's Japanese apprentice Shuji Amano who said the gelding was always travelling like the winner.
“When the other horse (Brierly) came at him on the home turn my horse found a bit and if anything we were going further ahead on the line,” Amano said.
