G1 Win For Mauralakana
Story By Nathan Exelby
Monday, 11 August 2008: A daughter of Muhtathir, Mauralakana made it four wins on end when winning the Grade 1 $US750,000 Beverly D Stakes (1900m) at Arlington Park.
Overall, the mare is now the winner of 11 races from 26 starts, for earnings of $1.449million – the bulk of that coming since Scarborough took ownership of the mare last November.
This was her eighth stakes success, but first at Grade 1 level, having placed at the highest level previously as a two and three-year-old.
The Beverly D followed dual Grade 2 successes at her previous two starts.
Mauralakana was ridden by Kent Desormeaux and is trained by Christophe Clement, who has transformed her into one of North America's top female turf performers since taking over her training this year.
Muhtathir is also the sire of Group 1 winners Doctor Dino and Sataw Queen.
Mauralakana is from the Double Bed mare Jimkana, a sister to former international globetrotter Jim And Tonic, best known to Australasians for his win over Fairy King Prawn and Sunline in the G2 Dubai Duty Free Stakes and also for taking the G1 Hong Kong International Cup.
Mauralakana came into Scarborough's ownership when Grant Pritchard Gordon's Badgers Bloodstock secured her on his behalf at last November's Keeneland Breeding Stock Sale for $900,000.
Plans were for her to be covered southern hemisphere time to top US based stallion Mr Greeley this year, but Saturday's win earned her an automatic entry for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf in October and those plans may now be put on hold.
